Illustrator Lineart Tut PT1 by dubird Illustrator Lineart Tut PT1 by dubird
Part 2

Tutorial for how I do most of my linearts now. I do use Illustrator for the lines, but it can export in a format I can pull into PSP with ease to color with, so why not?

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN'T READ IT! I tried to make it a good, readable size and font, and the compression quality seemed ok to me, but that may just be because I made it, so I know what it says. ^_^;

Anyhoo, don't have to link here if you use it, but it would be nice if you did. *ahem* Please don't take this and post it anywhere else unless I give you permission. Which means, you need to ask me first.

Thankyou for writing this tutorial. I'm looking for a program that will create vector-based lineart,
and it looks like Illustrator is what I'm after. Your tutorial was well-written and easy to follow,
even for someone who has never used Illustrator (but I live in Photoshop, and the interface
looks very similar)

You're welcome. ^_^ There's a lot of programs out there, but as Illustrator is what I use at work, that's what I learned to use. And yeah, if you use Photoshop, it's fairly easy to pick up a lot of the tools. I really only use it for lineart, but if you play around, you can do a lot of neat vector effects.

I'm looking for a lineart program for much the same reasons as you use
Illustrator; not having a steady enough hand for inking in Photoshop
with standard brushes. I want crisp, hard lines, without any jagged bits
where my pen has wobbled a bit. Also the vector aspect of the lines where
they won't distort upon scaling, as standard brushstrokes in Photoshop do.
Who knows, I may even try my hand at some vector art! ;)
Thanks again for the tut.

One thing I've learned since doing that tutorial is there is a lot of Illustrator brushes that you can use that give shapes to the lines; if you run a search on DA you can find several of them. I still use this method a lot, but the lineart brushes give me a different effect, and sometimes that's what I want to use instead.

Also, you should be able to import the .ai file directly into Photoshop as a smart object, and scale it without distortion. The PNG format is simply because I use PSP for coloring, which doesn't import them correctly.

Thanks for the extra information. I'll definitely experiment with the brushes
to see what other looks I can get on the lines. For beginning, I'll just start
off with something basic until I get used to the program. :)

NP ^_^ Another good place I've found some helpful tutorials is VectorTuts. There's several on there I want to try when I get time. Good luck! ^_^

Thanks for the tip! I bookmarked the site to look at closely later, but on
a quick glance, there are a couple of the tutorials I'd like to try when I
get the program :)
